Samenvatting
The current day oil and gas industry has, and is seeing, a major shift. Production of good quality clean oils with no contaminants and little water content that can be easily produced from shallow onshore fields is quickly decreasing. This production is replaced with the complex production of highly contaminated lower quality oil and gas from (deep) water fields. In addition, water production has grown orders of magnitude as a result of aging fields. This has resulted in a new era, in which the ability to drill as many wells at the lowest cost is no longer the winning strategy. To date, the ability to safe and efficiently develop, and sustain, production with a minimal environmental footprint from these complex fields is the main key to success! One of the key disciplines quickly moving to the centre of power in this new era is chemistry...
In this presentation, I will give an overview of some of the main focus areas for production chemists in the upstream oil and gas industry to date, including H2S , CO2, mercury, wax and inorganic scale. In addition, I will present the good, the bad and the ugly of one of the worst pipeline plugging incidents in recent history, as an example of what happens when chemistry is not taken seriously...
Curriculum vitae
Dennis Naafs is sinds 2004 werkzaam bij Shell in diverse banen met een sterke chemische achtergrond. Direct na zijn promotie in de geochemie in 2004 aan de Universiteit Utrecht begon hij als chemicus in het flow assurance team in Shell Global solutions in Amsterdam met een focus op wassen en asphaltenen. In 2007 maakte hij de overstap naar Rijswijk om zich als fluid property and sampling expert bezig te gaan houden met de monstername en analyse van olie en gas uit grote nieuwe olie en gas velden. In deze periode werkte hij aan nieuwe vondsten in Australie, Zuid-Oost Azie, Rusland, het Midden Oosten, Noord Afrika en Europa.
In 2012 werd hij als production chemist gestationeerd in Muscat, Oman, waar hij al snel manager van laboratory services voor Petroleum Development Oman (een Shell joint venture) werd. Van 2016 tot februari 2021 was hij werkzaam in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, als Shell secondee voor Petronas als hoofd van productie chemie en WRFM (Wells, Reservoirs, and Facilities Management) expert.
