Candidates can only be nominated for this award by their supervisor. The report must describe research in the field of chemistry, life sciences, process technology or (bio)molecular sciences and carried out in the context of a course at a Dutch institution. Non-Dutch people are also eligible for the prize. A jury appointed by the KNCV will assess the proposed report and the candidates.
The nominations for the Gouden Vlam 2024 are open, candidates can be nominated (by their supervisor) until June 30. Candidates who write a report in the 2023-2024 academic year are eligible for the prize. Nominations can be made by submitting the following:

- Digital version of the report
- a brief argument from the supervisor(s) why the student in question is eligible for the prize (importance and quality of the research and independence of the candidate)
- CV and full contact details of the candidate (including email address and telephone number)
