How to Develop an Impact Strategy?

Workshop for researchers who want to increase the impact of their projects

Funds increasingly require researchers to develop a societal impact strategy as part of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). Moreover, engaging with stakeholders and professionals outside science benefits the careers of those that pursue a career in science and those who consider a job elsewhere. This course provides participants with the right tools to increase the impact of their projects.

Workshop content
Participants design activities for the societal valorisation and outreach of their research project. They will develop a clear view on the relevance of valorisation and knowledge dissemination for their personal career and/or research proposal.

The workshop starts with an introduction on societal valorisation for disseminating research results, developing research proposals and networking in society. Then, the participants will work in small groups on various ‘building blocks’ required for successful storytelling: they connect the societal challenges of their research project with an analysis of societal values it influence. Each participant combines his own building blocks with an elevator pitch. Part two of the workshop is aimed at identifying the major target groups and ways to reach them.

For whom?
PhD-students, junior- and senior researchers, in an academic and company setting.

Learning objectives
At the end of the workshop, participants

understand the importance of impact-strategy;
have practiced with telling stories about their research to a non-scientific audience;
can identify the stakeholders that are relevant to their research;
possess the tools to write an impact strategy for their research proposal.

Michiel Hulshof is one of the founders of Tertium, a research consultancy focussed on the societal valorisation of scientific research. He is one of the initiators of De Oplossers (‘The Solvers’), a group of 500+ scientists from a variety of disciplines, who bring forward solutions for complex social challenges that are published in Dutch media. He works as a journalist for Vrij Nederland and de Volkskrant.

Frans van Dam is founder of ScienceCom consultancy. He is an experienced trainer and lecturer on science communication and presenting and writing skills. He is first author of ‘Science communication, a knowledge base’ 2014 and co-authors ‘Ingredients of credibility – good food revisited’ (2012). He was lobbyist/policy advisor biotechnology at Consumentenbond and head of communications of the Centre for Society and the Life Sciences.
